Gucci, the Italian elegance that conquered the world

A story of beauty, craftsmanship and innovation that changed the fashion world

Founded in Florence in 1921 by Guccio Gucci, the Gucci fashion house has become a global symbol of Italian craftsmanship, visionary creativity and innovative design. Initially specializing in luggage and travel goods, the company has evolved, keeping its Italian roots strong and celebrating its Florentine heritage.

Guccio Gucci, after working in London, returned to Florence to open a small store on Via della Vigna Nuova, where he sold leather luggage and travel goods. Working with local artisans, he created products that fused British elegance with Tuscan craftsmanship. In the 1930s, due to the scarcity of fine materials, Gucci experimented with the use of hemp, linen, and jute, resulting in iconic designs such as the Bamboo bag with burnished bamboo handles.

In the 1950s, Gucci introduced the moccasin with the horsebit and the green-red-green ribbon, inspired by the saddle girth, consolidating the link with the equestrian world. In the 1960s, the logo with the two crossed Gs, the founder's initials, was born, while the 1970s saw the launch of the first ready-to-wear collections, with the double G printed on shirts and buttons.

Over time, Gucci has managed to keep the essence of Italian-ness alive through the enhancement of local craftsmanship and attention to detail. The headquarters in Casellina, on the outskirts of Florence, houses the production of limited-edition handbags, shoes and leather goods. Here, skilled artisans select and process fine materials, such as python, crocodile and ostrich skins, combining tradition and innovation to create unique products.

In the heart of the Florentine Oltrarno, however, we find Palazzo Settimanni, which houses Gucci's historical archive. This space, accessible only to employees, preserves more than 100 years of the brand's history, with collections of legendary handbags such as the Jackie and Bamboo, scarves, dresses, shoes and lifestyle accessories. Spread over five floors, the archive represents a bridge between traditional craftsmanship and innovation.
